Over the past several years, I’ve been acquiring tools and materials for building and maintaining our living spaces. Having a well-organized and stocked workshop means fewer trips to the store, ease of finding what you need, and knowing when to reorder more.
It really helps to know how various parts and materials are named so that you can follow conventions when organizing and stocking your workshop, and one of the most common consumable goods you need are fasteners.
These are normally named as such:
General Fastener Type Drive Type Head Style Material Diameter–Thread Count x Length
For example, I just bought some knob pulls that came with screws that were a few mm too long. The originals were:
Machine Screws Phillips Drive Pan Head Brass M4–0.7x20mm
But since they’re just slightly too long, I need to either trim them slightly shorter, or get new screws with matching Diameter–Thread Count, but a shorter Length component. In my case, the other aspects aren’t critically important to the function, and their appearance is negligible as they’ll be inside of drawers.
Boltdepot.com is great for learning more about fasteners, though I haven’t purchased anything from them so I can’t speak to the quality of their products or services. I regularly refer to their Fastener Basics PDF resource, as well as several other helpful online tools.
