How to fix Polycom IP Phone Handset so it doesn’t slip off the phone

My office’s phones have been replaced by IP phones. After pretty lousy call quality on a previous model, our IT director set me up with a cheapie but goodie Polycom unit. Only problem? The handset falls off the phone body if you look at it funny. Turns out there’s a really easy fix.

The phone body has an adjustable latch that can be set in one of two positions: for a desk mount, or for a wall mount. Stupidly, this part ships in the desk mount position. Why is this stupid? Because the desk mount latch orientation doesn’t work. At all. The part should be integrated into the phone body and safe manufacture time/resources. It adds zero utility to the phone and likely increases the cost of manufacture and assembly. I’m sure Polycom knows this, but who knows – they don’t mention how shitty their desk mount latch setting is in this Quick Tips document they’ve published.

If you’re listening, Polycom: If you need to publish a “Quick Tips” white paper to explain something this basic and fail to mention that it’s a good idea to just permanently switch to the superior latch position, it isn’t just your design that is failing.
